Chance Has Spoken (2011)
For string quartet and vibraphone
Duration: 8 minutes
Commissioned by the New York Choreographic Institute
Choreography by Robert Binet
Program Note:
Chance Has Spoken for string quartet and vibraphone is a piece tracing the arc and interplay of those initial moments of falling in love. It opens with a melodic line in the vibraphone while the strings sustain a slowly shifting harmonic progression. As the piece progresses the counterpoint in the strings deepens while the vibraphone accentuates certain motivic fragments which break through the thick texture of the quartet. The richness of shifting harmonies mirrors the depth of awakened emotions, passions, and possibilities of blossoming love.
Chance Has Spoken was commissioned by New York Choreographic Institute in 2011 for a contemporary ballet created by choreographer Robert Binet.
